Identifying Pythons in Thailand

Pythons are Thailand’s largest snakes, and as such are rarely mistaken for anything else. It’s possible that a small Python might be confused with an Eastern Russell’s Viper.

Large snake up to 8 meters long (though typically 3-4 m) with brown blotches on the body and an arrow-like mark on the head. Found throughout Thailand except in S.

Red Blood Python

Heavy-bodied but only about a meter long. Reddish-brown with tan or greyish-brown blotches and a tan or grey head that is darker on the sides. Found in S Thailand, possible records from W and E.

Reticulated Python

Up to 9 meters long though more commonly 4-5 meters and less robust than other pythons. Intersecting “reticulated” pattern of brown, black, and yellow.
